Regional Transit Authority Expands

Citizens Advisory Council

October 3, 2013 - The Regional Transit Authority of Southeast Michigan (RTA), in response to public requests to broaden the membership of its Citizens Advisory Council (CAC), passed a resolutionto expand the membership of the CAC by up to 20 members.

"The RTA Board is committed to making sure all represented areas are treated fairly and respectfully,” said RTA Board member Julie Gatti. “We are reaching out to a variety of groups and publications to ensure that all interested parties are aware of the expanded Citizens Advisory Council. The passing of this resolution demonstrates that this RTA Board is focused on inclusion and openness.

The resolution reaffirmed the RTA’s initial list of 30 CAC appointments and immediately re-opened the application process to invite new applicants which may be considered along with previous applicants who were not initially appointed. The total membership of the CAC will now be up to 50 members.

“Macomb county residents are grateful for the broadening of the CAC membership. It shows the RTA is dedicated to fairness throughout this process,” said RTA Board member Roy Rose.

The purpose of the Citizens Advisory Committee is to advise the RTA on transit issues, make suggestions for improvements in transit service and to advocate for greater funding for public transportation.

The CAC may also do the following:

·         Review and comment on the comprehensive regional public transit service plan for a public transit region and all annual updates.

·         Advise a board regarding the coordination of functions between different owners and operators of public transportation facilities within a public transit region.

·         Review and comment on a specialized services coordination plan

·         Upon request of a board, provide recommendations on other matters that concern public transportation in a public transit region

An application form can be found on the RTA’s website, www.semcog.org/RTA.aspx. We are also reaching out to all local media to assist in spreading the word about the CAC expansion. The application deadline is October 23, 2013.

The RTA is tasked with coordinating public transportation across the City of Detroit and throughout Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties.
