Detroit Public Library Unveils Newly Renovated Franklin Branch

Grand Re-Opening & Ribbon-Cutting Celebration
Thursday, January 10, 2019 @ 2:00 p.m.

The Detroit Public Library is excited to announce the grand re-opening for the newly renovated Benjamin Franklin Branch Library! Renovations to the 5,700 square foot facility include: new heating & cooling system, flooring and furniture, updated lighting, ADA modifications to the restroom, and new computers for public use. The Franklin Branch offers a wide range of services and programs to help improve the quality of life for neighborhood residents, such as free computer classes, access to the Library’s online resources, enrichment programs for children and much more. The Franklin Branch, named in honor of the country’s Founding Father, Benjamin Franklin, opened on January 24, 1950.

Art at the Library

“50 Years of Immortality: Art Exhibition Honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”

The Detroit Public Library is very pleased to welcome Argentinian contemporary painter Ana Candioti in her first Michigan exhibition. On display in the Galleria through February 2019 is her series of paintings honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Candioti depicts the rich African and Haitian culture in Miami through her portraits exploring the people, religion, clothing and customs.

Black Bottom Street View

Visit Strohm Hall on the 3rd Floor of the Main Library to view a new exhibit—Black Bottom Street View. Curator Emily Kutil has recreated the Black Bottom neighborhood using historic photographs from the Burton Historic Collection. It's like a 3D version of Google Street View! You can actually physically navigate the former blocks and streets and be witness to this once vital neighborhood of the city.
