The University of Detroit Mercy Libraries are committed to Detroit’s revitalization. The Libraries long history of archival preservation of Detroit neighborhood documents, images, publications, and materials began in 1972 when Dr. William Bunge chose the University of Detroit to be the site for the Fitzgerald neighborhood’s archived material. The Fitzgerald collection dates back to 1870, documenting the Fitzgerald family farm and the growth of the neighborhood through the 1970s. The Palmer Woods Association joined the Detroit Historic Neighborhood Archive just two years ago in 2015. Neighborhood representatives actively add information to this collection, and regularly borrow the materials for displays and events.
Our goal for the Detroit Historic Neighborhood Archive is to preserve unique and historic information about our neighborhood communities. Archives staff will organize, preserve, digitize, and make items available on our University website for open use by anyone. Using our resources and expertise to highlight activities, organizations, events, and architecture, our efforts help your community highlight how Detroit neighborhoods are a source of pride for our city. We want to use our expertise to amplify the prominence of our historic neighborhoods and the opportunities they offer their local communities.
The University of Detroit Mercy Libraries invite you to an entertaining and informative event. This one hour presentation and following conversation will focus on how materials come to the University, how they are processed, and how we can make them available to the public. We will display materials from our current collections and engage in a lively discussion on how this free service to the neighborhoods can provide an economic boost to our community.
Please join the Dean of the Detroit Mercy Libraries, Jennifer Dean; Associate Dean for Public Services, George Libbey; University Archivist, Josh Duffy; and Archival Research Librarian, Pat Higo at this Detroit Historic Neighborhood Archive presentation. Each will be available to chat at the conclusion of the session.
