FoodLab is making food dreams come true!

During the SOUPs near the end of 2015, we featured two food entrepreneurs that are a part of the FoodLab program. We'll hopefully be doing the something similar again this month. However, we still encourage other folks to bring food, but this is just another way to learn about people working on projects they are passionate about in Detroit. Please, feel free to contribute a dish and get 60 seconds to talk about something important to you.

A letter from our Executive Director, Amy Kaherl:

When writing business plans, talking with grant makers, and curious individuals... We're often faced with the question that forces us to gaze into the crystal ball of our soul and predict the future, “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?”

Shying away from that question was something that I became quite good at over the years; I really didn't think my brain had the capacity to ever conceive of what the last five complete years of doing SOUP would end up looking like. We've made it to this place in SOUP's time and history, and I wish I could say that I had predicted this explosion of SOUP doing powerful, impactful work, not just in Detroit but now all over the world!

I think six is a good look for us.

Over the past six years, there have been amazing highs (reference: White House Champion of ChangeBBC flying us to Nepal and working with an amazing group of students wanting to see change in their community, or watching astounding ideas pitched at SOUP become community stakeholders) and some really low lows (do we have enough money to keep going, burn-out, and lack of follow-up). In 2015, we watched the power of the idea grow and expand throughout the world in ways we could never have imagined. Just last year 50 cities or communities in the UK alone said, "YES! SOUP is how our community can connect and exchange."

Six years.

For us, that time means that at the end of last year (2015), we chose to file for our own nonproift status. We are here to stay and to build neighborhood-wide support systems using the SOUP model in, our dream, every square mile in Detroit. We know that there is power when we sit down, look our neighbors in the eye, and say, "Yes! I believe in your idea and I believe in you."

When our anniversary rolled around this year, we were quiet about it. It felt fitting as the world kept spinning, cheering on football teams and eating chicken wings, that I sat down with a small group of compassionate art makers to talk about the power of conversation and the need for committed, collaborative dialogue. I think that is exactly where I needed to be: to continue to listen and respond to the power of giving voice.

This next year is going to be a big one for us! We've mentioned that we feel like SOUP has been a wind-up car about to be set down on the table after many years of winding up. I hope you can join in continuing to support our efforts in Detroit and around the world. We hope that if we haven’t seen you in a while that you will join us at a future dinner. If you can’t find the time in your calendar, perhaps you would think about donating to our efforts in creating safe space for voices to be shared in Detroit and its neighborhoods. You can do that by donating here:http://detroitsoup.com/donate/.

Thank you for being a part of our journey! We wouldn’t be here on the other side of 5 without your support.
