NEWCOMERS: Plainview Block Club, Eight Mile Community Organization
Some are old and some are new, but all the groups who have registered for the 10th annual ARISE Detroit! Neighborhoods Day have one shared belief - everyone must do their part to improve our neighborhoods and quality of life.
They are all looking forward to Aug. 6 when hundreds of organizations and thousands of volunteers will cover every city zip code with scores of community service and improvement projects.
"We are trying to engage our residents because they have been disengaged in the past," said Carla Thomas, a board member with the Eight Mile Community Organization, which registered for Neighborhoods Day for the first time. "We want to promote inclusiveness. The more neighborhood activities we have, the people will participate. We are trying to bridge the gap between old and new residents."
Neighborhoods Day is way to focus on the positive, Thomas said, because the bad always seem to receive plenty of attention.
"This will bring the focus on the good things," she said. "It will help us turn away the bad seeds."
The Eight Mile Community Organization, located in the 48221 zip code in the Pembroke/Meyers area, will have the dedication of the Alphonso Wells Memorial Garden on Neighborhoods Day. There will be a rain barrel demonstration and discussions on environmental issues.
Some of the previous Neighborhoods Day participants that have returned for the 10th annual event include the Grandmont Rosedale Development Corp, Life Church, and the 15th Street Block Club Association.
