Riverside Park Update

The Michigan DNR on Monday advised the Detroit City Council not to approve a controversial land swap with the Moroun family’s Detroit International Bridge Co.

Mayor Mike Duggan’s administration downplayed the objection by the DNR – received on the eve of a planned council vote today — but one city councilwoman said the letter means the council should delay its vote.

Detroit International Bridge Co. needs a 3-acre piece of the city’s Riverside Park near the Ambassador Bridge to pursue its plans to build a twin span that would complement the existing, aging crossing to Canada.

The Riverside Park proposal is back on the Detroit City Council agenda for Tuesday, July 21, 10 a.m. at City Council Chambers, Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, 2 Woodward Ave., 13th Floor, in Detroit. This is another opportunity for you to weigh in with your opinion about the Riverside Park deal between the city of Detroit and the Detroit International Bridge Co. Representatives from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and Department of Natural Resources will be on hand to speak about the ongoing environmental investigation and remediation efforts and important issues related to conversion of public outdoor recreation space, partially funded by state dollars, to non-recreation space.
