YOUTH VIOLENCE PREVENTION MEETING SET FOR SEPT. 25  

 

Join Council President Saunteel Jenkins and Councilman James Tate for their Youth Violence Prevention Task Force on Wednesday, Sept. 25 as they work to reduce youth violence in Detroit. The meeting is at 5:30 p.m. at Plymouth United Church of Christ, 600 East Warren Avenue.

 DETROIT CITY COUNCIL TO HOST EVENING COMMUNITY MEETING AT ELMWOOD PARK CHURCH OF CHRIST ON SEPT. 24  

 

The Detroit City Council will host an evening community meeting on Tuesday, September 24, from 7 - 8:30 p.m. at Elmwood Park Church of Christ, 2001 Antietam.  

 

Citizens and organizations have the opportunity to submit by phone, prior to the meeting, their specific concerns, addresses of problem locations, or other community-related issues.

 DETROIT FIRE DEPARTMENT HOSTING SPECIAL EVENTS IN OCTOBER

 

 The Detroit Fire Department (DFD) will host the following events in October.

 

 October 2

 

10 a.m. The Detroit Fire Department’s Community Relations and Fire Marshal divisions will conduct a fire safety class at Engine 30 at 10 a.m. for students at Martin Luther King Jr. Education Center, 16827 Appoline.

 

October 8

 

DFD will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Breakfast with the Detroit Fire Fighters at the newly renovated Cobo Center at 7:30 a.m.

 

October 9

 

DFD will host a press conference at Engine 27 regarding the donation of smoke alarms for Detroit citizens.

 

October 10

 

DFD will be at Whole Foods at 1 p.m. to teach shoppers how to use fire extinguishers.

 

October 26

 

The Detroit Fire Dept. will conduct a Fire Safe walk on the city's east side from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. The location will be announced at a later date. Fire personnel will go door to door to install free smoke alarms.  

 

DETROIT RECREATION DEPARTMENT OFFERING BOXING LESSONS, BASKETBALL CLINIC, DANCE LESSONS FROM FALL THROUGH SPRING

 

 The Detroit Recreation Department has a wide range of offerings for residents of all ages that run from now through spring 2014. If you are interested in boxing lessons, basketball clinic, Hustle for Health, or dance lessons, please see below for details.

September 16 - March 2014 at the following locations:

·       Adams/Butzel Complex

 

·       Crowell Recreation Center

 

·       Lasky Recreation Center

 

·       Young Recreation Center

 

The lessons are for individuals 6 – 50 years of age. There is a $25 fee for participants 18 and older. The fee is $20 for participants under 18. Participants must have center membership.

 

 BASKETBALL SKILLS & DRILLS CLINIC

 

 The Recreation Department will host a Basketball Skills & Drills Clinic from Nov. 6 through March 5, 2014.

 

The clinic will teach the fundamentals of organized basketball, movements, defensive and offensive play, ball handling and dribbling, vertical jumps, and team concepts.

 

The clinic, for children ages 10 and under, costs $65. It will be held the Adams/Butzel Complex, located at 10500 Lyndon. For more information, call 628-0990.

 

 DANCE LESSONS

 

 The Recreation Department is offering dance lessons on Saturdays from September through June 7, 2014 at Clemente Recreation Center, located at 2631 Bagley. The Recreation Department offers the following classes:

 

Pre-Ballet

 

10:15 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. for children 3-5 years old. Cost - $110*

 

Jazz

 

10:45 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. for children 6-8 years old. Cost - $130*

 

Hip Hop

 

11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. for ages 9-12. Cost - $150*

 

*Fee includes registration and costume.

 

Payment plan: 50% due by Dec. 1; final payment due March 1. (Family discounts are available)

 

 HUSTLE 4 HEALTH

 

 Adams/Butzel Complex will host Hustle and Ballroom classes from September through June 2014.

·       Hustle – Wednesdays 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. and Saturdays 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

 

·       Ballroom – Thursdays 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.

 

Cost: $2 with center membership per session; $5 per session without center membership.

 

 DETROIT RECREATION DEPT. OFFERS PEE WEE/TOTS PROGRAM

 

 Looking for fall activities for your young children? The Detroit Recreation Department is offering a Pee Wee/Tots Program for children ages 3-5. The program is offered on Saturdays from September 21 through November 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Adams/Butzel Complex, located at 10500 Lyndon. The fee is $20.

 

 The program will include: creative activities; arts & crafts; swimming; sing-a-long; education components (numbers, alphabets, colors); cognitive movement and youth activities.

 CUSTOMERS CAN USE NEW KIOSK TO PAY WATER BILLS

 

 Detroit water customers can now pay their bills using an automated payment kiosk at the Customer Service Center on the first floor of the Water Board Building, 735 Randolph in downtown Detroit.

 

 The kiosk allows commercial and residential customers to pay their bills, with transactions posted to the customers’ accounts electronically and immediately. There is no transaction fee for customers who use the kiosk.

 

 The payment kiosk accepts cash and checks, as well as MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and Diner’s Club credit/debit cards. When cash is used, the kiosk does not make change.

 

 CITY OF DETROIT DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS RECEIVES $10 MILLION FOR TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENTS

 

The City of Detroit Department of Public Works (DPW) received a TIGER grant of $10 million last year for certain non-motorized transportation improvements and streetscape work. The City was the only recipient from 2012 TIGER grant in Michigan for transportation purposes.
