2018 Public Events

May through October - Guided Tours Every Weekend
Saturdays & Sundays 11am and 2pm
Let our historians guide you on a 1.5 hour walking tour through the fort and some of its buildings. 
$5/person on site (please arrive 15 minutes prior).

Weekday tours (Mon - Thurs) are available by appointment for groups of 4 to 25 people by contacting Jim Conway at 313-628-0796.

Hours of Operation
Beginning the first weekend in May until the last weekend in October, the fort is open every Saturday and Sundayfrom 10am - 4pm. The fort hosts special programs on other days, too (see the 
Events page). Additionally, group tours are available on weekdays (see below). 

Parking
Secured, on-site parking is $5.00 per vehicle. Parking is free for Coalition members! See our

Guided Walking Tours
Guided walking tours are optional - but highly recommended - and available for $5.00/ person. Expect the tour to last between 1 and 1.5 hours. In addition to regular weekend tours, group tours are available on weekdays by appointment (minimum 4 adults). To book a weekday group tour (Mon - Thurs), 
contact Jim Conway at 313-628-0796.

Tuskegee Airmen Museum
The National Museum of the Tuskegee Airmen is housed at Historic Fort Wayne. Their hours are often by appointment.

May 5 - Veteran's Recognition Day
9:00 to 5:00
WWII and Vietnam camps and battle re-enactments, military vehicles, talks given by veterans of WWII, Korean War, Viet Nam War, Gulf War, Iraq War, and Afghanistan conflicts. Veterans and their families will have a private luncheon (by invitation only) from Noon till 1pm. More info coming soon. 

May 5 - Spring 'USO' Swing Dance
6:30 pm to 10:00 pm
Live band! Free dance instruction. Prize raffles. Info here.

May 6 - Living History Day
9:00 to 3:00
Your opportunity to see the real deal as living historians of many eras take over the fort.

May 12 - Historic Fort Wayne Work Day 
Volunteers will be working around the fort on various important projects. Volunteer signup coming soon.

May 19 and 20 - Vintage Base Ball Tournament
Our Early Risers host a weekend-long exhibition with many regional vintage teams! More info coming soon.

November 10 - Mad Anthony Cycle Cross Race
USA Cycling sanctioned event open to the public. Watch and/or race. 

Dec. 1 - Christmas at the Fort
A merry day of guided tours providing a look at our American Christmas through the years - all the way back to the Civil War and beyond. 

Dec. 8 - Christmas Swing Dance 
Annual Christmas Cheer Swing Dance featuring 20-pc Dearborn Big Band. Arrive early for complimentary dance lessons. 

Fort Rules

The City of Detroit Parks and Recreation Department supplies the following guidelines for visitor safety:

  • At least one adult should accompany children on the Fort grounds.
  • NO pets; Service animals are welcome.
  • All visitors must wear shirts and shoes.
  • DO NOT ENTER or approach any building unless accompanied by a museum guide.
  • NO metal detectors, digging and taking of artifacts.
  • Picnicking is allowed, but NO barbecues, fires, or alcoholic beverages.
  • Please place trash and litter in proper receptacles.
  • NO fishing or swimming is permitted.
  • The shoreline is a hazardous area, please stay 15 ft. from the river’s edge.
  • Do not climb on anything or enter any fenced off areas.
  • Please report any vandalism observed to Fort Staff. Visitors will be held responsible for any damage they cause.

Auxiliary Directions

Turn by Turn from the North

 

  1. Take I-75 South to Exit 47A Clark exit (this is below I-94 so head south on I-75 if coming from either direction).
  2. Turn left on Clark
  3. Follow Clark until it ends at Jefferson and turn right
  4. Follow Jefferson about 9 blocks to Livernois
  5. At Livernois, turn left into Historic Fort Wayne.

 

Turn by Turn from the South

  1. Take I-75 North to Exit 46, Livernois exit.
  2. At the top of the exit ramp, turn right on Livernois.
  3. Follow Livernois until it ends at Jefferson.
  4. Cross Jefferson and enter Historic Fort Wayne.

Returning South from the Fort
Due to I-75 closures, we recommend the following route:

  1. Exit the lot and turn left on W Jefferson
  2. Follow the detour signs to get back to I-75 South
