Dear Supporters of Peace and Justice in Latin America,

 

 

I would like to remind you about the following upcoming events this semester, sponsored by Carney Latin American Solidarity Archive, held on the McNichols campus of University of Detroit Mercy (with one April 4 evening event at our Law School downtown campus). Please come. The events are free and open to the public; however we do have one event on April 5, that is a fundraiser dinner, that is free to students but all others are requested to make a donation of $10 or more.

What follows is a short description of each. All are on the McNichols campus at UDM unless otherwise noted.
 
Wed. March 30, 4 pm and 5:30 pm, two events in CF 138: Puerto Rico's Debt Crisis at 4 pm, addressed by History Prof. Jorge Chinea of WSU, and Eric LeCompte, Director of Jubilee USA, an interfaith organization working for mercy for indebted countries and reform of banking practices. Jubilee USA has a current campaign asking people to call Congress and ask them to support a solution for Puerto Rico that will help poor children on the island and give the economy and democracy a future. Jubilee USA Network is an alliance of 75 national organizations and 550 faith communities working to build a more inclusive global economy.

At 5:30 pm (Wed March 30, C&F 138) Eric LeCompte will reflect upon the meaning and observance of Pope Francis' Year of Mercy. CLASA is grateful for the co-sponsorship with College of Business Administration for this event.  CBA is hosting light refreshments just before the 5:30 p.m.  talk.
 
 
Monday, April 4, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 pm, Briggs 317:  Irma Ilsy Vásquez Cardenas is a lead attorney and a human rights defender who will describe her work for the Fray Bartolomé Human Rights Center (FrayBa) in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. (She will also speak at the Law School later the same evening, Room 352 at 8 p.m.). In Spanish with English translation.
 
Tuesday, April 5, 2016, in Chemistry 114, 5:15-6:30 p.m., Fr. Jose Idiáquez, President of Universidad Centroamericana (UCA), Managua will share his expertise in theology and anthropology by discussing  “Indians, Campesinos and Rural Development in Central America.” After a short break, please walk over to the Ballroom for our major evening event.
 
Tuesday, April 5, 2016, 6:45 to 9 pm  in the Ballroom, join CLASA and our many co-sponsors for our annual Fundraiser dinner for the UCA Jesuit Martyr’s Scholarship. Music by Julie Beutel and Bob O’Brien, and talks by  Fr. Jose Idiáquez, President of Universidad Centroamericana (UCA), Managua and reflections by Richard Brackley (brother to Dean Brackley). Delicious pupusas will be served by our Hispanic American Student Association (HASA). Wednesday, April 20, 6:45 p.m. Briggs 317, please come to hear Marilyn Fischer  (Emerita Professor of Philosophy, University of Dayton) speak on “Jane Addams on Peace, Humanitarian Work, and Social Philosophy.” This event is co-sponsored by the Philosophy Department and by Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.
 
Monday, April 25, 4-6 p.m., Briggs 317, Ruth Needleman (Professor of Labor Studies, Indiana University) will speak on "Democracy in Brazil and Brazilian Quilombos: the Right to Self-Determination of African-Descendants."
 
Finally, let me report that the exhibit of Art from Latin America (that had been displayed in the McNichols library last September-October 2015) that was at the Swords into Plowshares gallery downtown Jan-March 2016, sold five paintings. Over $1000 was raised and sent to Sr. Peggy's Centro arte para la Paz in Suchitoto, El Salvador (this is in addition to the $2000 we already sent her, based on the earlier exhibit at our campus). There are only 14 paintings left. They will be exhibited during the fundraiser dinner on April 5, if you would like another chance to purchase one.
