Teen Street Skills

• 501(c)3 nonprofit educational community program designed by Robbie Buhl

• Program puts teens behind the wheel to learn skills used for a lifetime

• Participants learn how to maximize car performance to properly react to adverse conditions

• Relies 100% on sponsor support from businesses and individuals to underwrite program costs as it is free to participants

Teen Street Skills is a new community program, led by Robbie Buhl, educating teen drivers ages 15-21 with a legal driving permit on street safety. More than the typical driver's education program, teens will learn about how to maximize their car's performance in order to properly react to adverse conditions

This program puts teens behind the wheel to learn skills that will be used for a lifetime. This includes techniques teens need to be safe and responsible drivers on our community’s streets, including:

  • Driving Basics, Defensive Driving Behavior
  • Skid Control
  • Emergency Braking
  • Accident Avoidance
  • and much more!

#1 | Car crashes are the #1 cause of death for teens age 16-19.

40% | High school students reported that they texted or emailed from behind the wheel.

1in5 | 16-year-old drivers have an accident within their first year of driving

The program features four segments, split into two parts, over a 3 1/2 hour time period

overall safety

Basic driver's education courses do not teach safe driving skills; just "rules of the road". It is important that a teenage driver understand those elements in driving that he/she can control and those that he/she cannot control and therefore must react to. The skills learned in the TEEN STREET SKILLS program will last a lifetime. Also, when parents are actively involved with their teenager’s driving and are good role models, better decision-making happens when teens are behind the wheel.

Before attending a Teen Street Skills program, participants are required to pre-register by filling out the form on the session page. All fields are REQUIRED on the pre-registration forms.

Additional notes:

Print and complete both the Liability and Waiver forms found * HERE *.

  • Print and complete the Media Release form found * HERE *.
  • Your parent/guardian MUST sign all forms.
  • All forms MUST be printed and brought with you to the session and presented at registration.
  • If driver does not have parent/guardian signature, driver will not be able to participate in drive events.
  • Registration opens 30 MINUTES prior to session start.

LATE CANCELLATION / ABSENCE

Teen Street Skills is a FREE program, however, participants are required to submit credit/debit card information. If a participant cancels within 48 hours of their selected program, or does not show up for their selected program, the card on file will be charged $25.00.

REGISTRATION

Participants must pre-register ahead of time at the Teen Street Skills website. On-site registration opens 30 minutes prior to the start of the program. The program runs approximately 3 1/2 hours in either a morning or afternoon session. Morning sessions are typically 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM and afternoon sessions typically 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.

The cost of the program is FREE, however, credit card information is collected upon pre-registration. Those who cancel within 48 hours of their scheduled program, or those who are enrolled but do not show up, will be charged $25.

Program details

Following a brief introduction, students will be split into two groups of about 15 students. The 3 1/2 hour program is split into two segments covering four main exercises: Emergency Braking, Skid Control, Evasive Lane Change, and Car Knowledge 2.0.

The first segment involves Emergency Braking and Skid Control exercises, with students switching after 40 minutes. There is a quick course changeover to prepare for the second segment involving the Evasive Lane Change exercise and Car Knowledge 2.0 (with an Officer from Detroit Police Department). The two groups of students switch after 35 minutes.

Recap and certificate presentation

Following the two segments, the program concludes with final takeaways and tips from the instructors, as well as highlights (or lowlights!) from the day. Students receive a Certificate of Completion of the Teen Street Skills course, along with other participant swag!

How do I get to the teen street skills proving ground?

The Teen Street Skills proving ground is located directly adjacent Michigan Central Depot, aka, the "old train station". The physical address is 2240 17th St., Detroit, MI 48216 and the entrance will be clearly marked with Teen Street Skills flags and banners.

How long does the program last?

The Teen Street Skills program typically consists of two independent sessions in the morning and afternoon. Participants select one of the sessions, which lasts for approximately 3 1/2 hours, broken down into modules including Skid Control, Emergency Braking, and others.

What happens if it is raining on the day of the event?

Teen Street Skills runs rain or shine. Inclement weather often contributes to traffic incidents so practice should not be limited to just warm, sunny days!

What should I wear to Teen Street Skills?

Please wear comfortable clothes for the event, as you will be getting in and out of cars throughout the program and walking to the different exercises. Dress appropriately for the weather/temperature.

My parent / guardian wants to come along…can I bring them?

Yes, you can absolutely bring your parents. In fact, it is encouraged that parents attend, as there are great learning experiences for teens and adults, alike.

Are food and/or drinks provided?

We provide coolers filled with bottled water.
