Meet Ruth Johnson, CDAD's New Public Policy Director
Ruth Johnson, JD, is the Public Policy Director at Community Development Associates of Detroit. CDAD views its policy work as fulfilling its mission to serve as an advocate for the community development industry, neighborhoods and its members as a foundation for a strong City of Detroit.
She is a dynamic leader and a joyful servant who helps community stakeholders and organizations build their power; enhance their knowledge and skills; and nurture relationships with decision makers. Ruth has experience working with hard to reach and underserved communities including racial and ethnic minorities, language and literacy differences, and the very young and the very old. Throughout her career, Ruth has coordinated public policy advocacy activities in Mid-Michigan, West Michigan and Southeastern Michigan. Her work includes helping community groups develop policy agendas and implement strategies to transform issues into meaningful, effective action. As part of this work, she connects these groups to partners and allies on the local, state and national levels to magnify the impact of their actions. Lastly, her work is grounded in building and nurturing relationships among youth, parents, seniors, business leaders, people with disabilities, educators, policymakers and other key stakeholders.
Previously, Ruth served as the Assistant Director for Transportation Riders United. For over seven years, she directed organizational activities; raised funds; led advocacy campaigns; and coordinated volunteers and interns for a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving and promoting public transportation in Greater Detroit.
Ruth draws on her experience practicing law for twelve years; serving as the executive director of a nonprofit; serving on numerous boards and commissions; volunteering in schools, in her community and in her church; and operating her own business. After working for a corporate legal department, law firms and in solo practice representing individuals, business, nonprofits and public entities in state and federal court, Ruth decided to use her education and training to serve the community as her full-time vocation. Working in the nonprofit community, Ruth gained front-line experience managing programs, staff, volunteers, boards and budgets and nurturing relationships with policymakers, funders, business and religious leaders, schools, parents, youth and the media.
The public, policymakers and the press frequently seek Ruth for information and advice. She serves as the Secretary of the Conference of Minority Transportation Offices, Michigan Chapter. |

CDAD members and community based organizations are encouraged to join the coalition. Now is a really important time to get involved with the “Community for a Sensible Charter Coalition” We have been providing updates in our monthly newsletter and to our members directly.

Information on the Community for a Sensible Charter Coalition:
- A community based coalition founded to ensure that community voice is accurately reflected in any proposed revisions and citizens of Detroit are kept fully informed of proposed changes to our current charter.
- Members of the progressive community, nonprofits, block clubs, neighborhood associations, and grassroots groups are invited to join.
- Member groups are asked to commit to a once a month meeting for the duration of the charter revision process.

Southeast Michigan Counts is offering funding and technical assistance for Census 2020 outreach activities to organizations that serve historically undercounted communities in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties. Grants are available to support projects that will:
- Engage and educate undercounted communities about the importance of the 2020 census
- Familiarize communities with the census process and changes to the 2020 census
- Develop and implement effective strategies to boost census participation and support communities beyond the life of the project
Within these priorities, applicants should design a project that best serves their community. Projects could include knocking on doors and visiting block clubs, partnering with local businesses to connect with employees and customers, providing opportunities to access online census forms, sharing stories through local media and online networks, and other innovative and effective ways of connecting with people on this issue.

Community Engagement Fellowship
The Michigan Community Service Commission invites your organization to join a Community Engagement Fellowship. The intent of the Community Engagement Fellowship is to provide volunteer managers with professional development training and technical assistance to allow them to more effectively support and engage volunteers. Community Engagement Fellows will have access to content through an online resource called VolunteerPro with the goal of enhancing their current professional skills and knowledge and allow their organization to strengthen its ability to support volunteers. Deadline to apply is March 18.
