Dear MCHR supporter,

Thomas Paine said: "These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman."

It is has been one unbelievable summer and now we have just 53 days before the November elections.

Our democracy is being threatened at every turn. Will you be a sunshine patriot or are you willing to work for change and perhaps the the future of democracy this fall  Here is a well written but short  article on the threats. Make it a must read.

MCHR's first event of the fall will be a collaboration of several groups to present a Voter's Town Hall   (see flyer below). Learn about the ballot proposals and learn how to listen to candidate's words to learn what they really stand for. Being informed when you vote is the first step. Voting is the next important step. Are you registered to vote (October 9th is the deadline in MI) To register go to:  https://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,4670,7-127-1633_8716_8726_47669---,00.html   and will you vote in November???

Other steps you can take to save democracy:
Get out the vote!
Protect voting rights
Stop voter suppression
Check corporate rule
Reform campaign finance
Act to remove wealth inequalities(living wage, workers rights)
Build respect for all groups and unite for the common good
Safeguard a free press. social media, dissent
Keep public institutions and resources public
Be invovled in a group locally
Talk Politics (around the dinner table, with people of different viewpoint, with youth)

Watch this email next week for a resource sheet on ways to get involved!

MCHR has been involved in the develoment of a NW Detroit park renamed for local civil rights heroine, Viola Luizzo. See flyer below for details on the dedication event on Saturday, September 29th.

MCHR will also have its Fall Film Series in October. We will feature current films on hot issues and supply facilitators for each film that will give the viewers a local perspective on the issue. As always we will leave ample time for discussion followed by a brief time for announcemnts. This series is a great way to gather with like minded folks! (See flyer below).
