Seize This Moment.
For a few years, I have been commenting on how Detroit is “having a moment.” Without any particular judgment, it was more a commentary on the vast national media coverage and increased interest in our city. Now, I feel that the neighborhoods (viewed as everything outside of Downtown and Midtown) are having a moment, along with the community development sector. There’s increased interest, city planning, articles and more. To CDAD members, I say that this is actually your moment. Your years of work, your tireless advocacy, your unabashed pride in your neighborhood has culminated to this point. The moment is yours and I encourage you to take it. Share your thoughts with our leaders, participate on the task forces, complete the survey, send your letters. You are the expert of your neighborhood and we all need to hear from you.
CDAD is here to help amplify your voice. We are excited to introduce our 2018 policy agenda at the February membership meeting. Look for more actions and ways for you to take a stance on issues. We are excited to begin a new project with DPTV. Funded by the Knight Foundation Fund at the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, this project will highlight issues and stories that come directly from you. We look forward to sharing the new plans we have for membership and caucus meetings. We’ve been listening. These new models will allow us to provide more opportunities and space for you to connect and work on the issues that you have identified as important to your work.
And we will be celebrating 20 years of CDAD work all yearlong! Join us Wednesday, February 21 for the first membership meeting of the year.

CDAD Member Spotlight:
In a city that includes five of the top-25 most-polluted zip codes in the state, Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice (DWEJ) is a voice for cleaner, safer, healthier neighborhoods.
DWEJ is dedicated to providing all Detroit residents with the tools they need to address environmental concerns in their own neighborhoods.
Established in 1994, DWEJ has grown from a grassroots volunteer organization to a major voice recognized locally, statewide, and nationally for its innovative programs and projects that stimulate economic growth while creating sustainable, livable communities. DWEJ is the oldest environmental justice organization in Michigan!
Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice strives to foster clean, healthy and safe communities through innovative policy, education and workforce initiatives, and through a commitment to the following activities:
COLLABORATE with a passionate community to fight for their own right to health, with lasting effects for generations to come.
PARTNER with researchers to build awareness of scientific data that points unequivocally to the need for change.
PROVIDE opportunities for underemployed young adults to gain skills to build safe homes and fight blight.

Introducing The Grand River Annex
Grandmont Rosedale's commercial corridor along Grand River has seen a renaissance over the last few years. CDAD member organization Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation's dedication to supporting entrepreneurs, small business, and artists along the corridor has continued with the opening of The Grand River Annex at 19556 Grand River Avenue in Detroit. The Annex, supported for the first year by the Kresge Foundation, is a cultural incubator intended to support the arts, culture, retail, and culinary pop-ups. Partnering with the Norwest Gallery of Art, the Annex's grand opening exhibit titled Detroit Noir: A Celebration of the Black Aesthetic is curated by Asia Hamilton and Co-Curator Tanya Stephens.
"The work that's being displayed in this gallery are from master artists. I mean these are the most established African American artists that are out, so to be able to see this work right here and not have to go all the way to a museum or see it on television is a total privilege" said Asia Hamilton, whose photography is featured in the exhibit. "Art just makes everything beautiful and it brings culture and diversity to the neighborhood and this is a great opportunity."
The exhibit Detroit Noir: A Celebration of the Black Aesthetic will run through the end of February. The Grand River Annex is open from Wednesday-Saturday from 12-7pm and Sunday from 12-4pm. National Community Reinvestment Coalition

The National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC) and our members create opportunities for people to build wealth. We work with community leaders, policymakers and financial institutions to champion fairness in baking, housing and business.
Formed in 1990 by national, regional and local organizations to increase the flow of private capital into traditionally underserved communities, NCRC promotes access to basic banking services, affordable housing, entrepreneurship, job creation and vibrant communities for America’s working families. Our members include community reinvestment organizations; community development corporations; local and state government agencies; faith-based institutions; community organizing and civil rights groups; minority owned-business associations, as well as local and social service providers from across the nation.
NCRC and local Detroit organizations are on a mission to leverage greater community reinvestment through the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing rule (AFFH), and expand access to capital and credit in Detroit communities, particularly in LMI neighborhoods. NCRC and our members continue to hold banks and the financial industry accountable for reinvestment in communities. In 2016 alone, NCRC, our members, some of whom were from Detroit, effectively negotiated two community benefit agreements (CBAs) with Huntington Bank and Fifth Third Bank.
During CDAD’s final day of Community Development Week, NCRC’s membership department and National Training Academy conducted a training on the Community Reinvestment Act Basics and on the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule (AFFH). Subsequently, NCRC members and the training attendees held follow-up meetings in November and December 2017, as well as in January 2018 to discuss greater collaboration around leveraging both CRA and AFFH in Detroit. As NCRC, CDAD, our members and Detroit leaders continue to meet to discuss our coming together, we are eyeing implementation of the two current agreements (Fifth Third Bank and Huntington Bank), as well as long-term goals for future CBAs.
The next Detroit community meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 19 from 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM in TechTown Detroit location at 440 Burroughs St, Detroit, MI 48202. There will be an orientation and an overview session held for newcomers from 4:00 PM – 4:30 PM.
We highly recommend that you attend the orientation session at 4:00 PM if this will be your first meeting. We hope that you will join us at this upcoming meeting in TechTown on Presidents Day 2018!

This fall, the City of Detroit will seek interdisciplinary consultant support for three separate yet complementary citywide planning, design and engagement efforts: the Sustainability Action Agenda, a Framework Plan for the Inner Circle Greenway, and the Public Lands Framework Plan. The goals of the webinar are to orient potential applicants to the City of Detroit’s current priorities and connect potential applicants based in Detroit, within the state of Michigan, and beyond to each other.

"Budget Season is here for the
City of Detroit!"
Want to ensure the city sets aside enough money to fix broken sidewalks and potholes in the roads? Are you interested in the size of investment the city is making in affordable housing? Are there city programs you think need more funding?
Detroit's budget process this Spring will determine how the city spends its money next year and it is entirely open to the public. The budget process will begin with Mayor Duggan outlining his budget proposal to City Council and the public on Friday, February 23rd at 10 AM. Then, each city Department will sit before Council over the next two weeks for a budget hearing to discuss their priorities and proposed budget for next year.
The public is encouraged to attend any and all of these hearings and can speak on them at the end of each day's hearings and again after the final hearing on Monday, March 5th at 4:30 PM.
Location: 13th floor of the CAYMC building (2 Woodward Ave) either in the Auditorium or the Committee of the Whole.

What does community control of land mean to you and your organization? We talk a lot about community control of land as we try to envision a world where decisions about land are not driven merely by speculation and forces of exclusion. But who is the community? What level of control do they exercise? Toward what end?
Shelterforce is seeking short essays on this topic (200–500 words). Your essays can explore this from one of two angles: either how your community or organization already answers these questions in practice, or how community control of land ought to work, even if you don’t have an example yet.

Announcement: Detroit Design 2067 Youth Immersion Program
High School Juniors and Seniors can Apply by February 23rd
This endeavor will offer 12 Detroit area high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to examine the history of July 1967, its impact on our city/region and ways that we can identify key solutions that allow us to move forward together as a community. Those that successfully complete this program will also receive a $350.00 scholarship!

Free Webinar: “Planning for Environmental Justice and Healthy Communities”
Minority and low-income communities are often concerned about pollution exposures that result from local planning or zoning decisions that allow sources of pollution to locate near residential areas. To address these issues, California Senate Bill 1000 – the “Planning for Healthy Communities Act” (2016) – now requires many local jurisdictions to adopt environmental justice goals and policies or an ‘Environmental Justice Element’ into their General Plans.
