Alana WUniversity Prep Science and Math Elementary and Middle School chess teams have earned spots in a national tournament, and now they’re seeking the community’s help to take them all the way to Nashville.
The sixth-grade chess team is looking to raise $55,000 to cover their registration fees and traveling costs. So far, they’ve raised $38,000 toward their goal through various fundraisers.
Earlier this year, the team won the State Elementary Championship title, and are currently ranked number one and two in the K6 Championship section.
“Our Detroit UPSM chess teams continue to amaze us with their competitive skills and talent,” says Mark Ornstein, CEO of University Prep Schools and Detroit 90/90. “We’re thrilled that they’ll be competing nationally. It highlights what’s possible for our students at U Prep when they have the support of our incredibly dedicated teachers, parents and community.”
