Mapping the Detroit Institutions Undergoing Major Renovations

It seems like we hear about new residential renovations or historic buildings brought back to life every day. Today we're looking at some projects around the city that are more community institutions, from churches to parks to stadiums, that are undergoing some big changes. 1 Mosaic Midtown Church

This multi-denominational church right next to the Strathmore is getting some renovation inside, including the floors, windows, pipe organ, and a sound system. The building, which dates back to the 1880s, housed the Masons for many years. It should be ready to go by June 2016.

2 Brewster Wheeler Recreation Center

It's been a year, and we're still waiting to hear what happens next with the plans for the $50M redevelopment project that would save the abandoned Brewster-Wheeler Recreation Center, an early landmark in the career of Joe Louis.

3 The National Theater

4 Tiger Stadium

Now the Willie Horton Field of Dreams, PAL broke ground on the old Tiger Stadium in April, and will turn it into their new headquarters. Kids will use the field now, but it will be covered in artificial turf . Also, there should be more residential/retail in the area.

5 Assemble Sound

Assemble Sound was recently awarded a Motor City Match grant to renovate the 1871 church in front of Roosevelt Park where they currently have a recording studio.

 
 

6 El Club

The new all-ages venue is in the former site of the Mexicantown Fiesta Center. The club opens this month, and the owner hopes to create after school art programs in the two buildings next door (pictured below)

7 Galapagos Art Space

Someday, Highland Park is going to have a giant art complex. A year and a half ago, Galapagos bought buildings in both Corktown and Highland Park, but earlier this year decided to sell the Corktown warehouse and focus on Highland Park. We'll look to get an update soon.

8 Keyworth Stadium

Detroit City FC is renovating this 80-year-old stadium in Hamtramck for their May 20 season opener.

9 Uniroyal site (Riverfront)

Someday in the future, the RiverFront Path will go all the way from the Joe Louis Arena to beyond Belle Isle. Cleanup and soil remediation is underway at the Uniroyal site just to the west of Belle Isle.

10 Artists Inn

In the fundraising stage right now, Artists Inn is a project by poet Natasha “T” Miller to renovate and start a bed & breakfast for artists with a strong community outreach program.
