DDOT adds new bus service to Belle Isle Park

Bus riders do not have to pay additional park entry fees

The Detroit Department of Transportation has partnered with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to provide bus service to Belle Isle Park via the existing #12 Conant route.

The new bus service provides access for residents, visitors and staff to get on and off the island by simply paying the standard $1.50 bus fare with no additional park entry fees. A Recreation Passport is not needed for those visitors taking bus service onto the island. There is one bus stop on the island; it is located in close proximity to major attractions such as the conservatory, the aquarium and the giant slide.

"We are glad to provide access for residents to such a unique destination," said Scharron Rambus with DDOT. "Belle Isle has been a place where special memories have been made, and we are honored to continue that tradition."

Customers can utilize the service, which has been in effect since Saturday, via the #12 Conant bus route Monday through Friday between 5:50 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Service to Belle Isle will run roughly every 50 minutes.

"The DNR and DDOT have been working together for months to introduce bus service to Belle Isle Park," said Ron Olson, chief of the DNR Parks and Recreation Division. "As attendance at the park increased to more than 3.5 million visitors last year, it became increasingly important to provide additional transportation options to the island. It has been a pleasure to work with DDOT on providing this bus service."

“We are glad that DDOT has the opportunity to take our customers to Belle Isle," said Dan Dirks, DDOT director. "It is another way that we are showing Detroit's citizens that DDOT is continuing to improve.”
