48th Anniversary Commemoration of the Assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. & Press Conference by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC)

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in partnership with The Wright Museum invite everyone to this 48th anniversary commemoration of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. and press conference presented by the SCLC. Dr. Charles Steele, Jr., President of the SCLC, will announce the launch of the National Poor People's Campaign initiated by the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Free. 

 
Opening Reception for Empirical / Satirical: The Art of Cedric Henry and Byron Reed

All are welcome to the opening reception for The Wright Museum's newest contemporary artists exhibition, Empirical / Satirical: The Art of Cedric Henry and Byron Reed. This new exhibit features the work of cartoonist Cedric Henry and painter Byron Reed, both of whom use satire to explore the politics and day-to-day life of their communities. Science comes to life at The Wright's edition of the MSU Science Festival Detroit! Kids will experience hands-on weather forecasting with WDIV Channel 4 Meteorologist Andrew Humphrey and learn about one of science's trailblazers with a film screening ofPercy Julian: Forgotten GeniusFree.

Noted attorney, author and activist Randall Robinson, Distinguished Scholar in Residence at the Pennsylvania State University Dickinson School of Law, will be featured at two events this month at The Wright:
Charles Hamilton Houston’s People’s Lawyers Series: Tribute to Derrick Bell
Saturday, April 23 at 2 PM
Randall Robinson, Esq., will discuss reparations and human rights, with Carl Edwards, Esq., speaking on racism and American Law. This event is a tribute to Derrick Bell, the first tenured African American professor of law at Harvard University, and his unparalleled career as a civil rights attorney, legal scholar, professor and political activist. Free. 

 
Liberation Film Series: Randall Robinson on the Prison Industrial Complex & The Black Community
Sunday, April 24 at 3 PM
Randall Robinson takes on the Prison Industrial Complex, and signs copies of his 2011 novel, Makeda. Part coming-of-age story, part spiritual journey, and part love story, Makedais a universal tale of family, heritage, and the ties that bind. Also included will be a film excerpt of Aristide and the Endless Revolution. Free.
