December 21, 2012 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is seeking public comment on proposed changes to the non-radioactive hazardous materials (NHRM) routing designations for four routes located in Wayne County. The four routes are:

- Ambassador Bridge (Detroit) from Porter Street to Canada (Windsor) - Windsor Tunnel (Detroit) from Jefferson Avenue to Canada (Windsor)
- M-10 (Northwestern Highway ) from Howard Street to M-1 (Woodward Avenue), approximately 1 mile under Cobo Hall in Detroit
- M-10 from 8 Mile Road south to Wyoming Road.

MDOT is the authorized agency responsible for all NHRM routing designations, restrictions and requirements. After commissioning a study on the four Wayne County routes, reviewing the findings, and conferring with industry experts and other stakeholders, MDOT developed a report with an overview of the process and recommendations for proposed changes to the NHRM routing designations. The report acknowledges the risks of transporting hazardous materials to motorists, local communities and citizens of the United States and Canada, as well as property owners, the environment, and critical infrastructure. The transportation of NHRM, however, is essential to daily life and the economic vitality of Wayne County and Michigan. The proposed recommendations address public safety, while seeking to ensure the continuity of movement so as to not impede or unnecessarily delay the transportation of hazardous materials.

MDOT has made the synopsis report available for public review online at www.michigan.gov/mdotstudies and at designated locations in Wayne County, including the Detroit Public Library, 5201 Woodward Ave., and 22 branch locations found at www.detroit.lib.mi.us/branch-locator or by calling 313-481-1300.

The document also is available for review at the MDOT Taylor Transportation Service Center (TSC) at 6510 Telegraph Road in Taylor and the MDOT Detroit TSC at 1400 Howard St. in Detroit. Or you can review the document at the Michigan Department of Transportation, Bureau of Highways, 425 W. Ottawa St., Lansing, or request a copy by calling 517-373-9534. You may request the synopsis report in alternate formats, such as large print, audio tape and other languages, by calling 517-373-9534, providing seven days advance notice.

You are encouraged to submit comments to MDOT, summarizing a specific substantive and factual basis for your support or opposition. For consideration in the final determination, comments must be received on or before Jan. 31, 2013. Comments should be directed to Bob Parsons, Public Involvement and Hearings Officer, Bureau of Highways, Michigan Department of Transportation, P.O.
