Detroit City FCDetroit City Football Club is an American professional soccer club based in Detroit, Michigan that competes in the National Independent Soccer Association. Prior to joining the NISA in 2019, the club played in the Midwest Region of the National Premier Soccer League, a national amateur league in the unofficial fourth tier of the American Soccer Pyramid. The club played its home matches at Cass Technical High School in Midtown Detroit until 2015, before moving to Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck, an enclave of Detroit. The club is managed by Trevor James, a former Ipswich Town F.C. player who later was an assistant coach and scout under Bobby Robson.

Detroit City FC prepares to welcome back fans to Keyworth Stadium

  • Season tickets go on sale Monday (3/29/21)
  • 1,600 fans would be allowed at home games
  • Ally Financial signs on to two-year sponsorship

Detroit City FC

Season tickets for Detroit City FC games will go on sale Monday (03/29/21) and single game tickets will go on sale at the end of April.

Detroit City Football Club plans to reopen Keyworth Stadium to a rabid fanbase that's been locked out since the COVID-19 pandemic began but still helped the soccer club survive the past year.

Season tickets starting at $150 will go on sale Monday (03/29/21)  and single-game tickets starting at $15 will go on sale in late April, the team announced Thursday during the first official owners' meeting of the year, conducted over Zoom.

DCFC is entering its second season as a professional club in the National Independent Soccer Association. They start the season on the road April 13 and return for a home opener May 1 against the Maryland Bobcats.

As it stands, Keyworth will be limited to 20 percent total capacity, which is 1,600 fans — around the same crowd size the team played in front of in the early days at Cass Tech High School in Detroit. Team co-founder and CEO Sean Mann said socially distant seating, hand sanitizer stations and mask requirements will be implemented at Keyworth.

From an atmosphere standpoint, he said he is not worried about reduced capacity.

"Given our fans and supporters and passion, they're going to make their presence known," Mann told Crain's. "I don't doubt that one bit. What set DCFC apart from other sports in town is the match day environment."

Financially speaking, reduced capacity means lopping off 80 percent of the organization's main revenue stream. Mann has previously told Crain's that the team makes about $100,000 in revenue per home game at full capacity. Its total annual revenue in 2019 was $1.8 million.

"We were hopeful that restrictions would be lifted," he said this week. "That's the biggest concern whether we're in the black or not."

The sponsor side of the business has remained steady. While the club lost game day and corporate dollars last year as fans were not allowed to attend and advertising was limited during games, all its previous sponsors returned for 2021, said T.J. Winfrey, hired as chief of partnerships for DCFC late last year.

A new major sponsor this year is Detroit-based Ally Financial, which signed a two-year deal with the team and will have its logo on the back of jerseys this season.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The front of the jerseys still belongs to Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers, which is in its second of a three-year deal as title sponsor.

The club credits its fans for enabling it to keep kicking after the financial blows from the pandemic. In July, the team launched what was dubbed as the largest public fundraising campaign in American soccer. It sold off a minority ownership stake in the team to fans and raised $1.5 million.

"When we did that capital raise, it gave us the cash to grow the organization and weather continual restrictions on crowds," Mann said. "I'm more bullish on the future of the club."

Around 3,000 fans bought into the club. Part of the deal is that as part owners, fans get a behind-the-scenes look at the operation of the club and have input in its direction. That made for a bit busier discussion during Thursday's owners' meeting .

"We upgraded our Zoom capacity," Mann said.

Detroit City FC strikes first TV broadcast deal

  • 12 men's and women's matches to air live
  • Plug pulled on 2020 TV deal amid pandemic
  • DCFC home opener scheduled for May 1

Detroit City FC

Detroit City Football Club will return to Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck for its home opener May 1.

Detroit City Football Club will play this season in front of a limited crowd for the first time since the pandemic, but also for the first time, those unable to be at the stadium can watch on TV.

The soccer club has signed a deal with WMYD-TV20 Detroit and CW Television Network to broadcast select men's and women's games in the Detroit area and other major markets in the state, team co-founder and CEO Sean Mann said.

DCFC had been after a TV broadcast deal for years but landing one this season became necessary after the COVID-19 pandemic kept fans out of stands last year, eliminating the team's primary source of income and exposing the vulnerability of its business model. The team had announced a deal with TV20 in February 2020, but the pandemic blew apart the plan.

Financial terms of the new one-year deal with the networks were not disclosed.

"It's a growth area for the club," Mann told Crain's.

A total of 12 matches at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck will be broadcast live by the stations — TV20 in Detroit and CW in Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing and Traverse City, said T.J. Winfrey, hired as chief of partnerships for DCFC late last year.

DCFC's men's team is entering its second season as a professional club in the National Independent Soccer Association. The club boasts an all-time wining percentage of 72 percentage and won the Fall and Independent Cup championships last year, which gave them a berth in the NISA Championship, scheduled for July 3 at Keyworth.

The team starts the season on the road April 13 and returns for a home opener May 1 against the Maryland Bobcats.

The first six live broadcasts are:

  • May 1: DCFC Men vs. Maryland Bobcats
  • May 15: DCFC Women vs. Muskegon Risers
  • May 29: DCFC Women vs. Chicago Mustangs
  • June 5: DCFC Men vs. Stumptown AC
  • June 19: DCFC Women vs. Midwest United
  • July 10: DCFC Women vs. Lansing United

Additionally, a season preview will be aired in those markets on April 12. Google Fi, the tech giant's telecommunications brand, will be the presenting sponsor of live broadcasts this season.

Season tickets went on sale this week, with single game tickets to go on sale in the next few weeks. Mann said the club is waiting in the event that state health orders and capacity restrictions are changed again.

Around 1,600 fans will be allowed at home games at Keyworth Stadium, under guidelines issued in March that limit outdoor stadiums to 20 percent capacity.

All matches will continue to be streamed live on the club's YouTube page. Winfrey said the team is also looking to increase its exposure across the country and abroad by working with streaming and sports websites to air DCFC games and highlights in different markets.

"We have a cult following," Mann said. "We are building off of that and just growing our reach as a club."
