Dear Focus: HOPE Family,

In 2020, we’ve all encountered a year none of us could have predicted –and we’ve all had to pivot in so many ways.

During this time of so many difficulties, I think daily of our beloved founders, Fr. William Cunningham & Eleanor Josaitis, who established Focus: HOPE in another period of crisis.

They committed their lives to the pursuit of justice, and brought together the community to support the mission of Focus: HOPE - to overcome racism, poverty & injustice through intelligent & practical action.

I am truly grateful that the work they began continues today through the generosity of so many in our community – people like YOU.

Because of you – the mission of intelligent and practical action
to overcome racism, poverty and injustice continues.
Because of you – we have been able to continue helping
people move forward, even in a year like no other.

As we continue to work toward our founders’ vision of a metropolitan community where all people may live in freedom, harmony, trust and affection, we need partners on this journey.
Though everything looks a lot different right now at Focus: HOPE (as it does everywhere), we’re grateful that we are able to continue to serve more than 42,000 community members across Southeast Michigan every month.

This vitally important work - intelligent and practical action - is critically needed right now, and none of it would be possible without the support of our community.

Will you join us with a generous gift?

If you're able to, please give. Together, we will continue moving forward together through action to support real, positive change in Southeast Michigan and beyond.

And please spread the word that we’re still here working to support our community, even during this time of crisis upon crisis - and we can’t do it alone.

With thanks for your support, and wishing health & peace to you and your family,
Portia Roberson, CEO, Focus: HOPE
Each month, 42,000 seniors across four counties rely on food from Focus: HOPE to supplement their grocery budgets – and we’ve had over 4,000 new signups since the pandemic began.
We are making sure that seniors do not go hungry during the crisis by implementing no-contact pickup and delivery methods. With local partners, we are also distributing fresh food & bottled water to community members.
We are conducting virtual workforce training and recruiting. Specialists connect with current and prospective students virtually to address needs through Focus: HOPE supportive services or connection to partner organizations.
Through our virtual training platform, Microsoft Teams, and hands-on labs in virtual machines, over 100 students have graduated from virtual training!
We are committed to helping people remain connected, informed, and on track with their educational, economic, and community goals.
We have partnered with the Family Independence Initiative to provide direct cash assistance to over 500 Detroit households, to help them maintain their economic standing throughout this crisis.
Staff are providing students and families with virtual home visits, during which they provide educational activities as well as wraparound support services, including coordination to partner organizations for emergency relief.
We are also providing basic needs support, including baby essentials packages and food boxes, through coordination with partners.
